benefits of lymphatic drainage

So many clients come to me seeking help with their mental health, and we almost always find that their physical health is out of whack. One of the most common issues: lymphatic backup.

By practicing lymphatic drainage at home, you can improve your mood, your energy, and your overall physical health. And the best part? It’s really easy to integrate into your self care routine!

What Is Lymphatic Drainage?

Your body’s lymphatic system is in charge of filtering and removing toxins from your body, all the way down to the individual cells. It’s comprised of different vessels and organs (like your appendix, lymph nodes, and bone marrow), all of which work together as part of your immune system.

Lymphatic drainage is a healing modality that can help alleviate backups in your lymphatic system. Through gentle, intentional massage, you can help your lymphatic system along and improve your overall wellness.

How to Know If You Need to Perform Lymphatic Drainage

Any number of things can contribute to a backup of your lymphatic system, from dehydration to stress to using too many chemicals. Some signs you might have a lymphatic backup:

  • You experience brain fog or a lack of energy.

  • You wake up stiff or sore.

  • You’re always coming down with something, like colds and flus.

  • You have fluid backup or popping in your ears.

  • You have skin problems, like acne or dry skin.

  • You struggle losing weight, even when you’re eating well and exercising regularly.

By clearing these backups and improving drainage, you can have more energy, less stiffness, and even better circulation.

3 Ways to Do Lymphatic Drainage at Home

While you can always book a professional lymphatic drainage massage, I’m a big fan of doing it at home! Here are three ways I’ve worked lymphatic drainage into my self care routine.

1. Facial Gua Sha

Gua sha (or skin scraping) is an ancient Chinese technique that involves using a jade tool to massage your face and neck. Not only does this promote drainage, but it’ll also leave your skin looking and feeling fresh.

There are tons of different types of gua sha stones out there, but this is my favorite. (Plus, it’s gorgeous!) Use code LIVIA10 for 10% off!

2. Body Massage

If you want a more full-body experience, try a DIY lymphatic drainage massage. First, locate your body’s lymph nodes. Then, massage each point in gentle circles using your fingers. You can also use the palm of your hand to press and drag across different areas of your body, much like you’d do with a gua sha tool.

There’s lots of tools to use for this on Amazon. I recommend either this massage tool (I have it!) or this lymphatic drainage set.

3. Dry Brushing

Dry brushing is another way to promote full-body lymphatic drainage. Using a natural brush with rigid bristles, you brush your entire body in gentle circles. It loosens dead skin cells, improves circulation, and promotes lymphatic drainage all over your body.

Other Ways to Improve Your Lymphatic System

In addition to adding these healing techniques to your self care routines, you can also make lifestyle changes to support your lymphatic system.

  • Drink plenty of water. Dehydration can contribute to backups.

  • Avoid processed foods. The fewer processed foods in your system, the fewer toxins your lymphatic system will have to filter out.

  • Alternate between hot and cold water in the shower. Showering in hot water opens up your blood vessels, and cold water closes them. This keeps things moving within your body and promotes better drainage.

  • Wear loose clothing. Tight clothes can put pressure on your lymph nodes. Try to opt for loose, flow-y clothes, especially while you sleep.

Take care of your body, take care of your mind.
